For iPhone, iPad, and Android. Steps that name Apple-specific controls are marked below. Your installed version may offer a different set of features; check its Settings and Pro screen.

01 / First use

Quick start

  1. Allow location access. Open 10digit and grant location permission. Enable precise location, then wait for a fix with a clear view of the sky.
  2. Read your position. Open Location and check the coordinate format and reported accuracy.
  3. Save a reference point. Use the Location screen’s waypoint action. On iPhone and iPad, it is in the ••• menu. Give the point a useful name.
  4. Prepare your map. Open Map, choose the area and map source you need, and complete an offline download while connected.
  5. Check your setup. Confirm your waypoints, map coverage, units, datum, and north reference before heading out.
Before you lose coverage

Test the downloaded map in airplane mode, check battery and storage, and keep another navigation method available. Coordinate precision and device accuracy are different.

02 / Location

Read and share coordinates

The Location screen shows your position with heading, altitude, speed, and reported horizontal accuracy. 10digit supports MGRS, UTM, and latitude/longitude.

On iPhone and iPad: tap the large coordinate readout to cycle formats; long-press it to copy. Use ••• to save the current position or open sharing. On the map, the crosshair readout is the position at the center of the map, which may be different from your current GPS position.

Precision is not accuracy

A 10-digit MGRS reference expresses a position to a one-meter grid square. Your phone’s GPS fix may be several meters away from your actual position. Use the reported accuracy reading to judge the fix, and allow it to settle outdoors.

Match the map you are using

Check format, datum, and north reference when comparing readings. On iPhone and iPad, these are in Settings → Datums and Location Formats and Settings → North Reference. Use the same datum as your source map. True, magnetic, and grid north are different references.

For shortened MGRS entry, confirm the grid zone and 100 km square. The iOS Truncated Grids setting chooses the southwest corner or center of the entered square.

03 / Organize

Waypoints and overlays

A waypoint is a saved position. An overlay groups waypoints and other supported map objects into a layer. Use separate overlays for different trips, areas, or plans.

  1. Open Overlays and create or select an overlay.
  2. Add a waypoint from your current position, coordinate entry, or a supported map action. Give it a name you will recognize later.
  3. Open the waypoint to review its coordinate, edit its details, show it on the map, or navigate to it.
  4. Toggle an overlay’s visibility to show or hide its objects on the map.

Pro’s projection tool creates a new waypoint from a starting point using distance and bearing. Check your units and north reference before projecting. A shared overlay’s viewer role allows viewing; an editor invitation is needed to make changes.

05 / Prepare

Download offline maps

Download supported map coverage before leaving an internet connection. Offline availability depends on the area, selected map source, and downloaded detail.

  1. While online, open Map and frame the area you need.
  2. Open the map settings. On iPhone and iPad, choose Download Current View… under Offline Maps.
  3. Choose the available area and detail options. Include Terrain elevation data if you need offline elevation or terrain analysis.
  4. Wait for the download to finish. Review saved areas in Manage Offline Regions on iOS or the offline map library on Android.
  5. Switch to airplane mode with Location Services enabled and check the same area and map source at the detail levels you expect to use.

The free tier supports up to three offline regions; Pro removes that region limit. Device storage and source availability still apply. Raster MBTiles can be imported through the map’s import controls.

Previously viewed tiles may be cached, but browsing does not ensure complete offline coverage. On iOS, Clear Map Cache removes browsing cache and keeps explicitly downloaded areas. Deleting an offline region removes that saved coverage.

06 / Transfer

Import, export, and back up

10digit supports GPX, KML/KMZ, CSV, GeoJSON, and its own layer formats. On iPhone and iPad, use Settings → Import, Export & Backup → Import File…, or open a supported file in 10digit from Files, Mail, AirDrop, or the share sheet. Android offers file import through its import controls and system file picker.

Choose a format for the task
TaskUse
Exchange basic waypointsGPX or CSV export; check the result in the receiving app.
Use GIS toolsKML or GeoJSON export (Pro). Each format preserves different kinds of data.
Password-protect an overlayEncrypted Layer export (Pro), using a .mgrsenc file and a password.
Back up overlays and waypoints on iOSBack Up Everything creates a 10digit JSON file; Encrypted Backup (Pro) adds password protection.
Save a recorded routeOpen its track detail and choose Export GPX.

To export an overlay, open its menu and choose Export. For an encrypted file, choose a strong password and send it separately from the file. Importing that file requires the same password; support cannot recover it.

Before changing phones or reinstalling

Save a backup outside the app and verify that it is readable before removing the original data. The iOS “Back Up Everything” action covers overlays and waypoints; do not treat it as a backup of downloaded maps, recorded tracks, or every app setting. Export tracks separately and download maps again on the destination device. Restoring a purchase does not restore local data.

Ordinary interchange files are not password-protected. Export a small sample first when moving between apps or platforms, and check coordinates, names, and any special objects before transferring the rest.

07 / Record

Record a GPS track

Start a track recording from Map. Use the recording controls to pause, resume, or stop. Check that recording is active before setting off.

On iPhone and iPad, open Overlays → Tracks to review the saved route, show it on the map, export GPX, or add the stopped track to an overlay as a line. Available controls can differ on Android.

Recording uses location and battery. GPS reception and your phone’s location, background, and power settings affect continuity. Check the saved track after a short trial before relying on a long recording.

08 / Collaborate

Share a Team Overlay

Team Overlays provide live, end-to-end encrypted sharing over an internet connection. Creating one requires Pro; joining an invitation is free.

  1. Open the overlay’s sharing action. On iPhone and iPad, this opens Share Overlay.
  2. Choose its name and your display name. Set an expiration or require a passcode if needed.
  3. Share an invitation link or QR code with the intended teammates. Choose viewer or editor access as appropriate.
  4. Teammates open the invitation in 10digit and enter the passcode if required.
  5. Enable live position sharing separately if you want teammates to see your location.

Treat invitation links and QR codes as access credentials. Keep the full link intact, share it privately, and use invite management to revoke access or close the share when appropriate. Offline work cannot provide live updates until a connection returns.

Do not assume every object supported in a local overlay is synchronized to teammates. Check the receiving device before depending on a shared plan. Team Overlays and TAK networking are separate systems.

09 / Plan

Terrain and planning tools

Pro’s terrain line of sight compares two points and shows visible and masked terrain on an elevation profile. On iPhone and iPad, enable Settings → Line of Sight (Terrain), then use the map’s line-of-sight controls. Check the observer and target heights and include terrain elevation data in your downloads for offline use.

Terrain estimates do not account for every building, tree, obstacle, or change in the ground. Missing terrain coverage can also limit a result. Use the profile as a planning aid and verify conditions.

Range Tools is a separate Pro option for supported planning objects. On iOS it is enabled under Settings → Range Tools (SDZ Planning). These planning aids do not replace current official guidance or qualified range-safety review.

10 / Interoperability

TAK networking Experimental · Pro

10digit can exchange Cursor-on-Target data using its supported TAK connections. This feature is still being field-tested. Server configuration and transport support vary by platform and build.

  1. Open Settings → TAK Network and enable the feature.
  2. Use connection details or a supported server package supplied by your server administrator. Confirm the address, port, certificates, and authentication requirements.
  3. Press Connect and check the connection state before expecting contacts to appear.
  4. Choose separately whether to broadcast your own position. Connecting alone does not enable position broadcasting.

Local mesh needs a compatible local network, relevant permissions, and device support. A server connection needs network access to that server. Team Overlay encryption does not describe TAK transport security; follow the server administrator’s configuration.

If your version includes Exercise Server, review its displayed duration and hosting terms before starting one. Hosting is separate from the one-time Pro unlock. Do not use experimental networking as your only communications link.

11 / Companion

Apple Watch

The Apple Watch companion shows your current grid and navigation to the selected waypoint. You can also save a waypoint on the watch and synchronize it with the iPhone.

Install the companion through your paired iPhone’s Watch app, grant the requested location permissions, and open 10digit on both devices. If information appears out of date, check pairing and connectivity and reopen the phone app. Apple Watch instructions apply to Apple devices only.

12 / Preferences

Display and privacy

Use Night Vision Mode for the red-on-black display. On iPhone and iPad it is in Settings → Display and the Location screen’s ••• menu. Keep Screen On is useful for continuous viewing but increases battery use.

Choose distance, altitude, angle, speed, and north-reference settings to match your workflow. On iOS, Settings → Privacy & Security contains the app-lock and optional analytics controls.

Core navigation needs no personal sign-up. Online map providers receive tile requests, and optional sharing or TAK features exchange data when used. Review the 10digit privacy policy for the full details.

13 / Upgrade

Free and Pro

Start with core coordinates and navigation, saved waypoints, basic file exchange, and up to three offline regions. The Pro screen in your installed app is the reference for available paid features and current pricing.

Pro is a one-time upgrade. Depending on your version, it adds unlimited offline regions, advanced and encrypted exports, Team Overlay creation, extra datums, projection, terrain line of sight, Range Tools, TAK networking, and sharing without the 10digit footer.

Open the Pro screen from Settings to upgrade or restore an existing store purchase. Use the original store account. If you purchased directly from Scaleworks and your version provides purchase recovery, use that flow. Store purchases should not be assumed to transfer between Apple and Google Play. Separately priced hosting, where offered, is not included in the Pro unlock.
